Maybe life has been busy, or you need more time to gather your documents. If you are not able to file your taxes by the April 15th deadline, you may be able to request an extension that will allow you to file your tax return at a later date. The IRS allows the taxpayer to request an extension if they can't file by the April 15th deadline.
Keep in mind that filing an extension does not relieve the taxpayer from paying any taxes owed by the deadline. An extension allows the taxpayer to file at a later date to avoid any potential penalties and interest on the amount owed.
There are three ways to request an automatic extension of time to file a U.S. individual income tax return. 1. Pay Electronically 2. You can file Form 4868 electronically by accessing IRS e-file using your tax software or by using a tax professional who uses e-file. 3. You can file a paper Form 4868.
IRS Form 4868 is used when requesting a tax extension. Use Form 4868 to apply for 6 more months (4 if “out of the country” (defined later under Taxpayers who are out of the country) and a U.S. citizen or resident) to file Form 1040, 1040-SR, 1040-NR, or 1040-SS.
Requests for extensions are usually granted.
Taxes should be filed by the October 15th deadline.
